Best movies out right now?

• Top of the list:

  (#1) Seabiscuit -- Toby McGuire (Spiderman & Pleasantville) is always nice to look at ... the underdog saves the day (or underhorse *grin*) ... no sex, little foul language, no gore ... Oscars certain.

• We saw S.W.A.T. last night:

  Samuel L. Jackson and Colin Ferrel in a cop movie ... underdog theme as well ... no sex, some foul language, no gore ... not an Oscar contender, but enjoyable.

• Swashbuckling good fun, (#2) Pirates of the Caribbean:

  Johnny Depp in a strange role (does he ever pick normal ones?) ... Orlando Bloom (Young blond elf in Lord of the Rings) is a cutie ... Nice girl (?) ... Very fun, very exciting, neat-o special effects for the ghosts (but not gory) ... so good it will probably spawn a sequel or two.

• Surprisingly good result from an Already-Done-That movie:

  (#3) Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and the girl that did that Parent Trap remake a couple of years ago (what was her name?) ... very enjoyable.

• On the edgier side:

  28 Days Later was a truly scary movie ... a modern twist on the old zombie motif ... several disturbing scenes, some foul language, some gore ... but very compelling.

• On the lighter side:

  Uptown Girls has Britney Murphy and Dakota Fanning (the little girl from I am Sam) in a riches-to-rags movie with the classic odd couple conflict ... prim and orderly versus free-spirited and messy.

• Definitely avoid:

  Gigli (slutty, cursing, gory, mobster, waste of $$$)
